Christmas Running
I am typing my early morning blog post and it is Christmas Eve Day. I've so much to do in terms of last minute shopping, dropping off cards or and gifts.
Oh yes, trying to fit in that run at some point today. Do I feel like it? Do I have time?
I have to admit running is a great way to de-stress and perhaps I will go right before I start my busy day like right now.
Christmas Day I will be running as it is my time to be on my own and to get in the spirit of Christmas. It is my celebration!
See you on the road.

Tis the Season to be Running
With the holidays just around the corner and the busyiness of trying to fit that run in can sometimes be difficult.
With all the Christmas parties and the extra food you may indulge during the time. It might be a good idea to try
to keep training.
During the holidays here are some tips to keep running and to keep the weight off from those too many egg nog lattees.
1. Run with a friend that way you are not only committing to yourself, but to someone else. You can also join a running club.
2. Record in your running log book. This will help motivate you and you can also record your daily calories during the holiday time.
3. Reward yourself after runs. It can be anything from a chocolate bar to a coffee with a friend.
4. Have a goal in mind. When is your next race? If you have registered for a race then you have already committed to training for this event.
5. Run right after work, don't hesitate into not going out for a run as you may not be motivated enough afterwards.
6. Run when you have the most time then you won't feel so pressured.
7. Enjoy every run. Just been out there doing it can be rewarding enough. Make it part of your daily routine.
8. Mix up your routes. This will give you a break from the usual routine.
9. Try cross training like snowshoeing make a day trip out of it.
10. Read running magazines and see what other runners are doing to help motivate themselves during the holiday season.

Winter Running Tips
Now that winter season is here it is important to dress in layers which is the key to keeping warm during the colder months.
Here are some of my clothing tips and also from this article on winter running tips.
http://running.about.com/od/coldweatherrunning/a/wintergear.htm
1. Avoid wearing cotton as it will soak in the sweat and will end up making you cold.
2. Wear a t-shirt, long sleeve overtop the t-shirt and then a light jacket that is both rain and wind resistence.
3. Wear winter tights as this will keep your legs warm.
4. Wear also reflective gear while you are training at night. Cars will see you better.
5. Wear a hat or toque. I wear a toque as my ears get cold easily. You can lose 40% of your body heat.
6. Wear socks that are not cotton.
7. Gloves are important as well as it will keep your hands warm. It is important to wear gloves as you can lose 30% of your body heat.
These are just some tips that I have found useful for me and my running clinics at UBC and City of Richmond.

Teaching Running at UBC
I will have my last running clinic next Wednesday after 13 weeks of instruction. It will be hard to say goodbye to the group, but we will end next week with a post run celebration.
In all my running clinics, I have speakers who come and share their knowledge on running.
This semester we had a shoe talk by Racquets and Runners, a stretching talk by John Moe who made the podium in the Boston Marathon.
Injury prevention and nutrition talks were also covered in the clinic as well.
As well, running tips are covered such as interval training and hill repeats.
UBC is a great place to instruct a clinic, and as well has some great running trails.
I am looking forward to my next clinic in January.

My first article on blogger
I arrived at the starting line bundled from head to toe. I see the cold crisp air coming from my mouth as I tried to keep warm. I still remember it was early November 2001 and I knew very few runners except for my husband and the running group that I joined. It was the opening of the Express way (half marathon distance) near Wonju, Korea.
Like at every race, I was nervous, but everything was foreign to me. I couldn’t understand the signs nor the language. I would just follow the runners. As there was five minutes left before the race I quickly removed all my layers and I quickly double checked my shoe laces were tied and my bib number was on. The bib number was made of cloth and I kept it as a souvenir.
We were then ready to go and I looked around to see where I could position myself. I went to the front of the pack and waited for the gun to go off. The nervousness quickly disappeared as I settled into the half marathon race. I relaxed not expecting anything except to complete it. The huge crowd became a small group of runners and little did I know that I was in the lead. I couldn’t really understand why a helicopter was flying above me so low that I wondered if I had done something wrong! I just kept going and paid little attention to everything around me. I felt strong and wasn’t sure where I was in position until one local runner said to me as we ran together through the tunnel that I was the number one woman. I couldn’t believe it. It was magical! I was over half way and I felt happy, but I was getting tired as the course was hard enough. I kept running though and kept thinking positive thoughts. I soon seen the the finish line about 200 metres away and I ran as hard as I could. I see the banner up a head and was so excited to break the banner. Without a moment rest, I was quickly shuttled into the direction of the media. My picture was taken for the paper. The runners were so gracious and I felt welcomed. The next day the director of the school said that I had made the front pages of their local paper. It was exciting and what quickly followed were more interviews. This was my first race experience in Korea and after that I raced a few more races. My racing experience there will always be a memorable one!
